History of the club

Founded in 1926, Athens Country Club has long served as the social and recreational foundation for residents of Athens and surrounding communities.

The Club was founded by Alonzo "Lon" Dudley, who hired renowned golf course designer Donald Ross to create the Club's original 18-holes. Gracing the hills northeast Georgia has become known for; the course was sprinkled with water features, adding challenge and dimension for golfers of all skill levels.

In 1949, the Club was purchased from Mr. Dudley by 300 founding members, who paid $300 each to invest in Athens' premier golf and social organization. The Club soon underwent a series of added amenities, notably a national class tennis center and aquatics facilities incorporated in the 1970s and 1980s respectively.
